An Overview of Slope and Deflection Methods for Beam

ABSTRACT Many methods are available to calculate the slope and deflection in beam in structural analysis. In this paper, an overview study of Macaulay’s method and Moment area method is carried out. Macaulay’s method uses the bending moment equation whereas Moment area method uses the bending moment diagram to calculate the slope and deflection. An overview study is carried out by solving one example by both methods. Study shows that both methods are using area of bending moment diagram and moment of area of bending diagram. More number of examples by both methods may add some more observations along with study of non-prismatic member is required.
