ABSTRACT
Auto-brewery syndrome (ABS) is a rarely diagnosed medical condition in which the ingestion of carbohydrates results in endogenous alcohol production. It is also known as gut fermentation syndrome. The organisms responsible for auto-brewery syndrome include various yeasts and bacteria, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Saccharomyces boulardii, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Candida krusei, Candida glabrata, Candida kefyr, Candida parapsilosis, Klebsiella pneumonia and Enterococcus faecium. It occurs in patients with small bowel syndrome after surgical resection due to the fermentation of malabsorbed carbohydrates. This review gives an overview abouthistory, causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of auto-brewery syndrome.
