An Uncommon Adverse Reaction of Zinc Oxide Cream in Pediatrics-A Case Report

Author Name : Sahala P A, Dr. Aaron George

ABSTRACT Diaper dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction of the skin in the perianal and perineal regions (diaper area). It is the most prevalent skin condition seen in premature infants. Diaper rash, very chapped skin, small burns, and other skin irritations can all be treated with topical zinc oxide. This drug is used to treat or prevent mild skin irritations (such diaper rash and skin burns from radiation therapy) as well as dry, rough, scaly, and itchy skin. Rarely does this medicine result in serious allergic reactions. The usual strategy for preventing and managing diaper rash is to use modest doses, like 15%.. Zinc oxide is works by covering the skin with a barrier to keep moisture and allergens out . A four-month-old infant was sent to the hospital citing complaints of redness in the neck that blistered and eventually peeled off. Before this occurrence, she had no relevant prior medical or pharmaceutical history. This type of skin reaction occurs when a lotion containing zinc oxide is applied to a sensitive area. Refusing topical zinc treatments and saline compressors aids in reducing allergic skin reactions.Since an infection is present as shown by the increased total count, antibiotic therapy has also been started. All of the symptoms had disappeared by the time of discharge. The count stabilized.Skin peeling healed without leaving any marks.
