Analysis of Psychiatric Morbidity among Athletes of Manipur

ABSTRACT
Background: International Olympic Committee consensus revealed Mental health issues are common health problems in competitive sports. Anxiety and related disorders, major depressive disorders (MDD) and depressive symptoms are frequent found among in elite athletes.
Aim: The aimed of the current study is to provide an insight into the prevalence of difference psychiatric morbidities in a sample of competitive athletes undergoing training in sports authority of India, Manipur branch.
Methods: A cross sectional study design was adopted in the present study and was employed a quantitative research approach. The participants were selected from the sports authority of India, Manipur branch. Stratified random sampling technique was adopted as a sampling procedure. All together 360 samples were selected from four different strata i.e. i) Combat sports ii) Individual power sports iii) Team sports and iv) Other individual sports. Then, Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview was administered to rule out any psychiatric problems. The statistical formulae like frequencies and chi- square was adopted as descriptive technique. Considering unequal probability of selection and nonresponse rate, weighted prevalence was estimates at 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
Results: Out of the 360 study samples, 34 respondents (9%) were having anxiety followed by 21 respondents (6%) were having suicidality and next with 18 respondents (5%) were having depression and the rest of the respondents i.e., 287 (80%) were not having any specific psychiatric morbidity. The overall prevalence of any psychiatric morbidity of student athletes of Manipur was estimated as 20%. Variable such as types of sports (p-value = 0.981) and sports related injury (p-value = 0.358) were found to have insignificant relationship with respect to psychiatric morbidity.
Conclusions: This study enhances in the spreading of awareness of mental illness and its advance technology of treatment in the field of medical sciences. It is recommended that all competitive athletes receive screening for their mental well-being as a routine assessment and those psychiatric symptoms in athletes should never be taken lightly, and should receiving care and support as early as possible.
