ABSTRACT Artavakshaya is one of the commonly encountered gynecological disorders described in Ayurvedic classics, characterized by diminution in the quantity or duration of menstrual flow and prolongation of inter-menstrual period. It has close clinical resemblance to oligohypomenorrhea described in modern gynecology. According to Ayurveda, Artavakshaya occurs mainly due to vitiation of Vata and Kapha doshas along with impairment of Agni and depletion of Rasa and Rakta dhatus, leading to improper formation and expulsion of Artava. Factors such as faulty dietary habits, stress, hormonal imbalance, sedentary lifestyle, and systemic disorders contribute significantly to this condition in contemporary times. The condition not only affects menstrual health but also has a direct impact on fertility and overall well-being of women. Classical Ayurvedic texts emphasize Nidana Parivarjana, Agni deepana, Vata-Kapha shamana, and use of Artavajanana and Raktavardhaka drugs in its management. Various Panchakarma procedures like Basti, Uttarbasti, and Nasya are also advocated for regulation of menstrual function. This review attempts to critically analyze the concept of Artavakshaya in Ayurvedic literature and correlate it with oligohypomenorrhea, along with its etiopathogenesis, clinical features, and therapeutic approaches. An integrated understanding of Ayurvedic principles can provide a safe and effective holistic approach for the management of this increasingly prevalent disorder.
