Artificial Intelligence in Modern Libraries: A Comprehensive Survey of Applications, Adoption Challenges, and Future Directions

ABSTRACT The rapidly evolving technological landscape has significantly transformed academic and public libraries from traditional manuscript repositories into dynamic, technology-enabled knowledge centers. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies are at the forefront of this digital disruption. This survey paper provides a systematic review of the current state of AI adoption in modern library environments. It categorizes existing AI applications into smart resource discovery, automated cataloging and metadata management, and virtual reference services. Furthermore, the paper critically analyzes key adoption challenges, including technological constraints, privacy and ethical concerns, financial limitations, and the LIS professional skills gap. Finally, strategic recommendations and future directions are proposed to foster effective Human-AI collaboration in library management.
