Assessment of Fire Emergency Evacuation Time in a Residential Building using BIM Simulations

Author Name : Shekainah Lawrence, Prof. (Dr.) Parampreet Kaur

ABSTRACT In the recent enhancement of the AEC sector for high-rise residential building construction, quick and efficient evacuation drills are important for the fire emergency concern(UpCodes, 2025).Even though the research focuses on recent effects of emergencies affecting human as well as the structure(Shekainah L., 2024). While conventional planning and designing methods lack the focus for the complexity of the situation and thus, a need for real-time interventions is seen. The need for real time measures to be taken for the systematic approach for emergencies is needed(Besiroglu, 2022).This research investigates the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with simulation tools, specifically Pathfinder, to assist and improve fire emergency evacuation strategies. Much research have been done to work for the evacuation time management for a structure, yet none focuses on the staircase type(Nazim Yakhou, 2024).This study focuses on evaluating two commonly used staircase designs: straight and dogleg. Simulations based on a 21-storey residential building reveal that dogleg staircases offer more consistent and safer evacuation outcomes. These findings will thus focus on the pattern of design and equip the designers with better evacuation time management through proper selection of the appropriate staircase for planning and designing.
