Awareness of Diabetic Retinopathy among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

ABSTRACT Context: Having a good understanding of diabetes and its related eye complications can go a long way in preventing visual impairment and potential permanent blindness. Diabetic retinopathy, in particular, is a significant contributor to vision loss and should be taken seriously. Aim: The objective is to evaluate the level of knowledge about diabetic retinopathy in patients who have type 2 diabetes mellitus. Setting and Design: This was a cross-sectional study carried out at an outpatient clinic located in the ophthalmology department of a hospital. Materials and Methods: A pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire administered by an interviewer was used to assess awareness of diabetic retinopathy during the period of January 2023 to July 2023.
