Awareness of Noise-Induced Hearing loss among Young Dhol Tasha Players in Maharashtra

ABSTRACT Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), poses a significant public health risk, especially in occupations or activities involving prolonged exposure to high noise levels. NIHL is of particular concern in India during public celebrations such as Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra, where Dhol-Tasha groups perform in processions, often exposed to harmful sound levels exceeding 85 dB Despite the risks, there is limited research on the awareness of hearing loss (HL) among these musicians. This study aims to assess the awareness of HL among young DholTasha players in the Pune district, Maharashtra. 50 participants, aged 18 to 35, with at least five years of DholTasha playing experience were selected. A validated questionnaire consisting of 19 items was used to evaluate the players' knowledge of noise exposure, its effects, and preventive measures related to hearing health. The currentstudy's findings will provide insight into awareness levels within this high-risk group and may guide interventions aimed at preventing NIHL and promoting hearing conservation. The results of the currentstudy revealed that moderate awareness about NIHL was seen amongDhola Tasha players.
