Ayurveda Perspectives of Varicose Ulcer - A Case Report
Author Name : Pravin Mogle, Shailesh Dhenge
ABSTRACT
Varicose ulcers are wounds which occur due to improper functioning of venous valves, usually of the lower limbs. Recurrences in severe chronic venous insufficiency may be as high as 37%, and it seems to be higher in patients treated without surgery. Although venous ulcers are typically small initially, they are often undertreated progressing to larger ulcers that are associated with more serious complications requiring more complex treatments. It is like a nightmare to the suffering patients, though a good number of the treatment principals are mentioned and practiced in allied science. Acharya Sushruta describes Dushta vrana (~ infected wound) in Sushruta Samhita can be correlated with varicose ulcer. A 65-years-old male presented with non-healing ulcer lateral malleolus of right leg of six months duration undergone allopathic and traditional treatment without any significant improvement. Significant healing in wound observed after 16 weeks of comprehensive Ayurvedic modalities consisting of internal use of Gandhaka rasayana, Mahamanjishtadi kashaya, Kaishore guggulu and topical use of Jatyadi taila. On the basis of this case study, we can roughly conclude that Ayurveda can give a ray of hope in the treatment of varicose ulcer. None of the complications were observed during this therapy.
