Ayurvedic Management of Indralupta(Alopecia Areata) - A Single Case Study

ABSTRACT Alopecia areata is a T-cell mediated autoimmune illness related to hair loss .In this ,there is non scarring intermittent hair loss in localised circumscribed patch . The scalp is the most commonly affected area ,but the beard or any hair bearing site can be affected alone or together with scalp. Alopecia areata is common in both men and women and also in children. It affects emotional or mental condition of patient due to its cosmetic concerns and social stigma associated with it, so patient expects efficient result as early as possible. Alopecia areata is explained as indralupta in ayurveda. Indralupta is depicted under Shirokapalagata Roga and Kshudra Roga by various Acharyas. In ayurveda, both shodhana and shamana therapy mentioned for it. A 44 yr old married female had complaints of patchy hair loss since 2 mnths with gradual increment. On basis of Ludwig’s classification, she was diagnosed as a Grade II case of khalitya. She was successfully treated with Raktamokshana , Depana Pachana aushadhi, krumighna, Rasayana Aushadhis along with Nidana-Parivarjana within 2 mnths.
