Ayurvedic Management of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease – A Case Study

Author Name : Dr. Sachin Koli, Dr. Abhishek Kumar Tyagi, Dr. Roshni Sahu, Dr. Vandana Saraf

ABSTRACT Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) refers to the build-up of excess fat in liver cells in the absence of significant alcohol consumption. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the prevalence of chronic liver disorders, including NAFLD, has been steadily rising in recent years. NAFLD is associated with an increased risk of developing conditions beyond the liver, such as osteoporosis, endocrine disorders, colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Ayurveda also offers comprehensive insights into liver-related ailments. NAFLD can be interpreted within Ayurveda as a Santarpanotha Vikara—a condition stemming from over-nourishment—linked to imbalances in Pittasthana, Raktavahasrotomoola, Kaphamedo Dushti, and localized disruption (Sthanasamsraya) in the Yakrut (liver).
