INTRODUCTION Sialadenitis is the inflammation of the salivary gland most commonly involving the parotid and least commonly the submandibular gland. The parotid gland is the largest of the salivary glands it is located superficially. It is covered by a superficial layer of the deep cervical fascia, forming the parotid space. Acute sialadenitis is usually due to bacterial or viral infections. Acute suppurative sialadenitis presents as rapid onset pain and swelling and it is treated with antibiotics, salivary massage, hydration and sialagogues such as lemon drops or vitamin c lozenges. Viral etiologies include mumps and human immunodeficiency virus and the treatment is directed at the underlying disease. Whereas the chronic sialadenitis is more likely to be inflammatory than infectious It is usually due to obstruction like calculi or structure and usually presents with swelling with erythema.
