Author Name : Dr. Dharamvir Bhardwaj

The Indian army was of immense importance to British imperial interests. It not only stood in reserve to maintain law and order throughout the sub-continent, but also strengthened British influence in the Middle East and ensured that the Indian ocean remained a British lake. An explanation for the economic backwardness of this region is provided by the recruitment policy of the British. This region became a major recruiting centre for the British Indian army & the army became a source of employment for people here. During World War-I, this region contributed one-fifth of the total recruitment from Punjab.
