ABSTRACT

Avian biodiversity was studied in the month of September 2021 in the research garden of Pakistan Forest Institute, Peshawar wherein Species richness, diversity and relative abundance were calculated. The number of species recorded (species richness) and the proportion of individuals in each species (relative abundance) statistically counted through Shannon &Weinner diversity index and Simpson diversity index. The total of 36species was recorded in the 02 sample sites with diversity value index of 3.024 and 0.71 respectively. The index value was calculated by both the methods were found as “high diversity”. The population of Rose Ringed Parakeet and Alexandrian Parakeet is increasing in the research area. Blacksmith Lapwing was also noted in the research area which was not previously reported. The availability of diverse vegetation and habitat management in PFI may the cause of variation of diversity.

The study area provide good habitat to large number of birds. Most of the birds depend upon food in the form of seed, grains, weeds and insects. Further investigation into the actual composition of the flora and fauna of the species would provide a clear picture to the factors influencing the diversity and density in the study area.

Key words: Avian Diversity, Species richness, PFI research garden, relative abundance and diversity index.
