Carbon Capture Technologies 2024: A Review on the Technology Readiness Level for Novel advancements on Carbon Capture

ABSTRACT Carbon capture technologies (CCTs) have emerged as a crucial strategy in mitigating climate change by reducing carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from industrial processes and energy production. The evaluation of their Technology Readiness Level (TRL) is essential to understanding their maturity, potential for deployment, and associated risks. This review paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the current TRL of emerging carbon capture technologies, including post-combustion, pre-combustion, oxy-fuel combustion, and direct air capture. It examines the technological advancements, challenges, and scalability issues faced by these innovations, with a focus on economic viability, energy efficiency, and integration into existing infrastructure.
