Causes and consequences of rapid decline of agricultural land at the Kanthi coastal area of Purba Medinipur district, West Bengal, India

ABSTRACT This research paper deals with the reasons for rapid reduction of agricultural land and its impact at the Kanthi coastal area of Purba Medinipur district. In the entire study area, the agricultural land rapidly decreases day by day in the last ten years. In the present time, we are watching that the food production decreasing, food price rising in market and land fertility decreasing and this all are the result of agricultural land losing. Though the agricultural land of this study area have been decreasing these can be taken a modern land use plan. Kanthi coastal area bears a huge population, resulting very high population density and high intensity of land and resource use. Mainly this study area is losing the arable land due to the high population growth and its infrastructure development, fish farming for fast economic development, urbanization, recreation, tourism industry etc. Finally it can be said that there is a lot of reasons for the reduction of agricultural land, just like that there are also a lot of consequences which are multi-dimensional. If proper steps are not taken, this study area faces environmental hazards near future.
