Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy: A Rare Case Report
Author Name : Sruthy Sunil, Suhiara Banu, Chintha Chandran, Shaiju S Dharan
ABSTRACT Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by progressive weakness and impaired sensory function in the limbs. It results from an immune-mediated attack on the myelin sheath, the protective covering of nerves in the peripheral nervous system. Over time, this damage disrupts nerve signal transmission, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness, numbness, tingling, and reduced reflexes. CIDP typically develops over weeks to months and can follow a relapsing-remitting or progressive course. Early diagnosis and treatment, including immunotherapy and physical rehabilitation, are critical to improving outcomes and preventing long-term nerve damage. A 44 year old male was admitted with complaints of weakness of both lower limbs since 6 months, numbness of both hands, bilateral foot swelling for 1 month and difficulty in walking. He had a known complaints of Type II Diabetes Mellitus, Subnephrotic range Proteinuria, Bilateral Pleural and Pericardial Effusion, Non Oliguric Acute Kidney Injury, Fatty Liver, Anemia, Hypertensive Heart and took Ayurvedic treatment from outside hospital. The patient condition was managed with IV Steriods, Antibiotics, Proton pump inhibitors, Diuretics, Antihypertensives, Antidiabetics, Probiotics, Statins and liver protectants. The patient was discharged in ahemodynamically stable condition with sustained vitals. The comprehensive approach was aims to manage the clinical condition.
