Claisen-Schmidt condensation of 5-chloro-2-acetyl thiophene with p-anisaldehyde using Microwave Irradiation

ABSTRACT

Claisen –Schmidth  condensation  is a convenient and well known method to obtain chalcones having α,β-unsaturated carbonyl system .The present work reports effective condensation of  5-Chloro-2-acetyl thiophene with p-anisaldehyde  in presence of ethanolic sodium hydroxide solution to obtain  corresponding  compound with α,β-unsaturated carbonyl system. The reaction is carried out by classical method using thermal heating as well as in presence of microwave irradiation to compare effectiveness of the microwave irradiation method. The synthesized compound 1-(5-chlorothiophene-2-yl)-3(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one is characterized on the basis of its chemical properties and spectral data.
