Classical Review on the Gandamalahar Dravya Mentioned in Nighantu

ABSTRACT
Gandamala is pathological condition which presents as swelling in the neck. while galaganda is single swelling occurring on side of neck, gandamala is series of similar swellings in the neck which looks like garland of swelling. The word gandamala is masculine gender formed from two words ganda and mala. Ganda means a swelling having the shape of button, boil, pimple, cheekbone, bubbles or bladder and mala means garlands. Garlands of swelling around neck is called gandamala. Aggravated kapha and media cause many swelling which suppurated slowely and gradually ion the axilla, scapular reguin, shape of the neck. Though kapha and media are mainly involved in the causation of the diseases the other doshas vata and pitta too get associated with the diseases [1]. Chikitsa principle- the treatment principles for gandamala are same as galaganda. These principles can be adopted in the treatment of this diseases as and when needed skilfully and according to the situation of the diseases. Siraved-venesection- Purgation-Nasal instillation-Medicated smoking-Oral consumption of ghee. Internal medication are kanchara kwath, varuna kwatha. External medication are various lepa tail are used [2]. There are many dravya mentioned as gandamalahar in various classical texts and nighantu.
