College Teachers’ Movement in Undivided Bengal (1926-1947)

Author Name : Prof. Nimai Chand Dan

In Higher Education since 1857 Calcutta University was the only university in the undivided Bengal for long. There were 120 colleges. Since all the colleges were within the jurisdiction of Calcutta University, the responsibilities of teachings in the colleges, selection of its syllabus, evaluation and administration of the colleges rest with the University of Calcutta.1The education policy of the government failed to meet the aspirations of the Indian people. The British Government was not only abortive in meeting the demands relating to education but also could not redress the demands of the professors attached with education. Teacher ship was a very respectable and noble profession and for that reason the professors attached with education considered of finding a suitable path to direct their demands and with that objective in mind, ABCUTA was formed.
