Comparative Analysis of Sales Growth Trends in Chronic vs. Acute Therapy Segments in the Indian Pharmaceutical Market
Author Name : Ajay Kumar Baghel
ABSTRACT This study examines the evolving sales growth dynamics between chronic and acute therapy segments in the Indian Pharmaceutical Market (IPM). Historically dominated by acute therapies such as anti-infectives and gastrointestinal drugs, the market has gradually shifted towards chronic therapies driven by the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, urbanisation and longer treatment durations. Using secondary data from IQVIA, AIOCD–AWACS, rating agencies and brokerage research for the period 2021–2025, the study compares growth rates, market shares and value contributions of chronic and acute segments. The analysis shows that while acute therapies exhibit short-term, seasonal and pandemic-related spikes, chronic therapies consistently record higher and more stable growth, leading to a structural reversal in market composition, with chronic therapies now contributing a larger share of formulation value. The findings highlight a persistent growth premium for chronic therapies and underscore important strategic implications for pharmaceutical portfolio planning, marketing focus and health policy in India.
