ABSTRACT

Background: Sthaulya, described in Ayurveda as a disorder involving excessive accumulation of Meda Dhatu, corresponds broadly to obesity. This study compared Trimada Churna and Tryushan Churna in its management.

Methods: In an open-label randomized comparative study, 60 patients with Sthaulya and a body mass index (BMI) of 30–35 kg/m² were allocated by lottery to two groups of 30. Group A received Trimada Churna and Group B received Tryushan Churna, each at a dose of 6 g twice daily. Seven clinical symptoms and four anthropometric measures were assessed before and after treatment.

Results: Both groups improved significantly on all reported symptoms and anthropometric measures (within-group p < 0.001). Overall reported improvement in subjective parameters was 85.45% in Group A and 66.76% in Group B, but no between-group difference in individual symptoms was statistically significant. BMI fell by 4.91% in Group A and 2.07% in Group B. Between-group comparisons favored Group A for BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, mid-arm circumference, and abdominal circumference (all reported p ≤ 0.001).
