Comparative Study on the Harmful Effects of Modern Utensil Cleaning Detergents and Traditional Ash-Based Cleaners Used In Rural India

Author Name : Puneet, Subhash Manohar Choudhary, Bharat Kumar Goyal

ABSTRACT The widespread use of chemical-based dishwashing detergents in modern households has significantly improved cleaning efficiency but raised concerns about environmental toxicity and health hazards. In contrast, traditional Indian villages historically used ash as a natural, biodegradable, and eco-friendly alternative. This study evaluates and compares the chemical composition, cleaning efficacy, environmental impact, and health implications of both methods. Our results highlight that while modern detergents are efficient cleaners, their synthetic surfactants, phosphates, and bleaching agents contribute to skin allergies, water pollution, and soil degradation. Conversely, ash, a natural alkaline residue, offers minimal environmental impact and negligible health risks. This study promotes the reconsideration of traditional methods in the pursuit of sustainable living.
