ABSTRACT

Vyanga is one of the most common disease which is related to our facial skin. In Ayurveda ‘Vyanga’ is counted as ‘Kshudraroga’. ‘Kshudra’ means minor and ‘Roga’ means disease; so Kshudrarogameans minor disease with simple etiology and symptoms.

Acharya Sushrut mentioned Vyangaas Kshudrarogain NidanSthanIt consists of brownish (Shyavavarni), thin (Tanu), painless (Niruja)pigmentation (vaivarnya ) on facial skin. It produces due to combined association of vitiated Pitta&VataDoshas&Rakta as Dushya. On the basis of clinical features Vyanga can be correlate with Melasma, one of the hyperpigmenatation disorder.Melasma is characterized by dark, discoloured patches on skin. It's also called chloasma. It typically occurs in the face and symmetrical, with matching marks on both sides of the face. Area of the body which exposed to sun can also develop melasma

Though Vyangais considered as Kshudrarogait has got major importance as cosmetic problem in the society. In modern medical science, topical steroids have been described in the management of facial melasma. However, the topical steroids are may cause adverse effects such as irritation, rashes etc. and are expensive too. Ayurveda treatment includes Abhyanga with Taila, Lepa, Pradeha, Nasya, Raktamokshana etc. Ayurveda mentions a good number of drugs like Kusthaghna, Kandughna, Raktashodhaka, Twakprasadaka and Varnyakara properties e.g. Arjuna, Nimba,Manjistha are helpful in management and can produce cutaneous depigmentation that remove the blackish discoloration of skin.

Though, several Ayurvedictexts such as SushrutaSamhita,AshtangaSamgraha&Hridaya, etc., have elaborated the pathophysiology and treatment of Vyanga, the available references are scattered. Thus, there is need of in-depth review and compilation of Ayurvedic texts and literatures. This study may be helpful in better understanding of comparative pathophysiology and management of Vyangaw.s.r to Melasma.
