Connecting with Land and Culture: A Study of Native American Poetry
Author Name : Anupama Singh
ABSTRACT Poetry is said to be the basic expression of human sensibility. Many critics believe that poetry is preferable because it can convey a message in a more condensed form. Poetry serves a different purpose for different people. National anthems, for instance, are songs that unite people; some songs are used for social reforms. In the case of Native Americans, poetry reflects a worldview unique to them. The relationship between human beings, animals and non-living things is called “the sacred hoop.” This unique relationship between different parts of creation, this unique way of looking at things, can be understood by reading Native American poems. This paper is a study of Native American poetry.
