Critical Review of Roundabout Design and Performance under Mixed Traffic Conditions: Implications for Indian Roads

Author Name : Suman Singh, Prof. Rajat Choudhary

ABSTRACT Roundabouts are increasingly promoted as an effective intersection control measure due to their potential benefits in terms of safety, operational efficiency, and environmental performance. However, most roundabout design principles and performance evaluation models have been developed in the context of homogeneous, lane-disciplined traffic conditions prevalent in developed countries. In contrast, Indian road traffic is characterized by mixed traffic conditions, weak lane discipline, high proportions of two-wheelers and non-motorized vehicles, frequent pedestrian interactions, and diverse driver behavior.
