Cyber Crime: A Form of Organized Crime

Author Name : Aishwarya Pandey

ABSTRACT

The emergence and expansion of the digital economy have significantly altered the criminal environment.  Hackers who gain access to computer systems purely for entertainment or notoriety are no longer the basis of modern cybercrime. Cyber space in today’s era is the easiest way to commit crime as the identity of criminal is not known. The criminals are forming a syndicate and using technology to commit a well-planned crime. National jurisdictions lacking adequate legal systems and the technological means to combat cybercrime can be advantageous to the organised criminal groups of today. Cybercrime has evolved into a global, quickly expanding, profit-driven sector with organised criminal gangs prospering behind it thanks to the ease of communication, anonymity, and accessibility of instruments for illicit operations. Enterprises and their profit-oriented activities by the cybercriminals require leadership, structure, and specialisation.  Fraud, hacking, malware development and distribution, DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks, extortion, and intellectual property theft are just a few of the cybercrimes that cyber organised criminals have been involved in. This paper investigates the characteristics of cybercriminal organisations. It briefly discusses the concept and extent of cybercrime, the theoretical difficulties in addressing what is known about cyber criminals, and the probable contribution of organised crime organisations.

Keywords: Cyber space, cyber-crime, technology, organized crime, legislations.
