ABSTRACT : Industrial Control System (ICS) is a general term that includes supervisory control & data acquisition (SCADA) systems, distributed control systems (DCS), and other control system configurations such as programmable logic controllers (PLC). Industrial control systems aim to streamline various business practices related to industrial production but most importantly, they reduce the human error rate by optimization. Industrial control systems are often found in critical industrial facilities like thermal plants, nuclear plants , heavy industries, distribution systems, power generation and water treatment facilities. Cyber threats are primarily aimed at industrial control systems through loopholes which can range from unlocked remote access, to poor firewalls, to a lack of network segmentation. The purpose of this article is to increase awareness about the security vulnerabilities that most companies are facing at their IACS and to propose a roadmap that seeks to guide designers and programmers in the new and complex world of industrial cyber-security.
