Defining Islam in the West: A Study of Maryam Jameelah

ABSTRACT

Maryam Jameelah was a prominent thinker of Islam and is one of the most prolific writers. She was a revivalist and ideologue and has written many books on Islam as an eminent Muslim Scholar. Being a Jew, previously, she has an in-depth knowledge of western civilization, and full command over Christianity and Islam. Having extra curious faculties of enquiry, she was restlessly analyzing, commenting and concluding immense aspects of knowledge. She extensively introduced the European women about the universality of Islam, the concept of brotherhood, the concept of peace, justice and equality and humanity. She condemned western concept of Feminism and replaced it with Islamic feminism. She touched the ethical, social, economic, political and cultural contributions of Islamic Sharia .This paper is a small attempt to look between lines of her publications and described the conclusive and dynamic thoughts of author. In this paper tried to shed light on her views about Islam and her vision about Islamic traditions, internal coherence limit of adaptation of modern scholars, democratic views and educational reforms
