Development induced Displacement – Impact on Adivasi’s at Polavaram National Irrigation Project A.P India

ABSTRACT
The Polavaram Irrigation National project is one of the many Displaced-inducing projects being implemented in developing countries like India. The Environmental impact Assessment (EIA) says 276 Villages in Andhra Pradesh, 4 Villages in Chhattisgarh, and 8 Villages in Odisha are likely to be submerged, corresponding to a total population on 117,034. An area of 3427.52 Hectares of Forest land in Andhra Pradesh is projected to be inundated. Major affected population are Adivasis, as they suffer by chronic poverty, wide spread unemployment, subsistence production, and poor basic facilities. The planning and execution of large development projects plays a vital role in making their lives more miserable. Development – induced displacement is forcing the targeted people out of their homes, and their native homelands, for the purpose of nations “economic development”. As per the 2011 census Adivasis (Tribes) population in India is 8.6 percent. And according to National Commission for Scheduled Tribes most of the development Projects are coming up on the lands of Adivasis 60% of their population are displaced by development projects and faced a disproportionate share of displacement. This paper will critically analyze how Development induced Displacement among Adivasis of Polavaram area.
