ABSTRACT

Background:-Infertility due to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a worldwide problem that is increasing at alarming rates. It is characterized by polycystic ovaries, chronic anovulation and hyper-and rogenism leading to symptoms of irregular menstrual cycles, hirsutism, acne and infertility. Insulin resistance and elevated levels of male hormones (androgens) are associated with PCOS. The sedentary lifestyle, dietary variations, lack of exercise and stress etc. are also the contributory factors. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of Aloe vera gel on polycystic ovary syndrome in Swiss albino mice.

Materials and Methods:- Adult female albino mice (25-30gm) treated by one intramuscular injection of 2mg/kg body wt. with Estradiol Valerate solvated in olive oil at the estrous stage for PCOS development, and were further treated with Aloe vera gel and Clomiphene citrate (0.5ml /mice) for 30 days. Parameters that were evaluated include bodyweight, FSH and LH Level, serum glucose and cholesterol level. This preliminary study explores the effectiveness of Aloe vera gel in prevention and treatment of PCOS condition.

Result and conclusions:-The treatment of Estradiol Valerate at the dose of 2mg/kg body wt. upto 40 days, induced PCOS in albino mice, which significantly (P<0.001) increased the body weight, serum LH and FSH level in treated group of mice as compared to control group of mice. It also increased the serum glucose and cholesterol level in treated group of mice as compared to control group of mice. The Aloe veragel and Clomiphene citrate treatment, bringing normal body weight and normal LH level while, there is no significant effect on FSH level. AVG and CC treated PCOS albino mice also exhibited significant (P<0.001) reduction in serum cholesterol and glucose up to the normal level. In conclusion, AVG and CC has chemical components with anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-cholesterol effects and hypoinsulinemia effect.
