End Life of Vehicle Management (ELV): A Case Study on ELV Management in Mumbai region

ABSTRACT
This work summarizes the results of collection of data related to vehicle registration, de-registration/scarp, auction and various case studies of practices involving End Life of Vehicle (ELV) Management. The work aims to showcase that what happens to a vehicle in India at the end of its life-cycle. As a first step, a link chain has been established through participatory elements with owners, dismantlers, and recyclers. Study shows constant interaction within participants in a complex, interdependent process in ELV industry and understanding the economic aspect of recycling ELV’s in India. The major focus of the study is the economic, environmental, and social challenges that emanate from a change in status quo. For the environmental factor, the current informal ELV handling system and government policies have been studied thoroughly. A Case study has been taken into consideration to highlights the loop holes in current ELV management system on country wide scale. This report ends with proposition of system which will formalize the current informal work and some series of recommendations for policy makers as well as manufacturers in accordance with what product they release in market.
