ABSTRACT
Sustainable development requires more than economic growth; it requires the creation of communities in which people can live healthy, secure, productive and dignified lives while protecting the environment for future generations. Urban and rural areas are often treated as separate spaces in development planning, although they are deeply interconnected through food systems, employment, migration, infrastructure, markets, natural resources, energy, finance and information. This article identifying the importance of strengthening urban-rural relationships as a pathway toward sustainable communities and improved human well-being. It says that sustainable development cannot be achieved through urban-focused or rural focused policies alone. Instead, integrated regional planning is required to connect cities, towns, villages and surrounding ecosystems. Drawing on evidence from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and peer-reviewed research, the article discusses major challenges including spatial inequality, inadequate infrastructure, environmental degradation, rural poverty, unplanned urbanization, food insecurity and unequal access to health and education. It proposes integrated transport and digital connectivity, sustainable agriculture and food systems, decentralized public services, green infrastructure, inclusive employment, participatory governance and climate-resilient planning as key strategies. Building stronger urban-rural relationships can create more balanced development while improving health, livelihoods, social inclusion and environmental sustainability.
