Examining Quality of Concrete in Pile Foundations Using the Cross-Hole Sonic Logging (CHSL) Test
Author Name : Anshul Joshi, Amit Kumar Yadav, Gaurav Sahu
ABSTRACT The quality of concrete in pile foundations can be evaluated using the Cross-hole Sonic Logging (CSL) test, which involves processing wide-band CSL data. One key aspect of this method is the First Time Arrival (FTA) time, which plays a crucial role in identifying pile defects. In pile capacity or CSL analysis, it is typically assumed that the pile cross-section and the concrete's elastic modulus are uniform, but in practice, these properties often vary. This procedure helps determine the accuracy of defect location and provides detailed information about the nature of any issues. FTA is specifically useful for pinpointing the location of distress within the pile. This technique can accurately detect voids or defects within the rebar cage of a drilled shaft and represents a significant advancement over traditional quality control methods in Metro and Bridge construction.
