Exploring the Challenges and Opportunities of Filipino Cross-Border Remote Work
Author Name : Mercy Mae M. Gador, Ronel V. Sudaria, DBA
ABSTRACT This qualitative study explores the challenges and opportunities faced by Filipino professionals engaged in crossborder remote work. Using a phenomenological approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with three Filipino remote workers from various industries. The data was analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step method, revealing key themes related to challenges and opportunities. Challenges identified include legal and employment issues, such as lack of social protection and job security; communication barriers arising from cultural differences and time zone discrepancies; and technical difficulties like unreliable internet connectivity and power outages. These challenges align with findings from recent studies on remote work in the Philippines. Despite these obstacles, participants reported several benefits of cross-border remote work, including higher income potential, improved work-life balance, and opportunities for continuous learning and skill development. Successful coping strategies included investing in backup power and internet solutions, improving communication skills, and prioritizing tasks effectively. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the evolving landscape of global remote work in the Philippines. The findings underscore the importance of addressing challenges while leveraging opportunities to ensure sustainable and fulfilling remote work experiences for Filipino professionals in the global marketplace. Future research could focus on developing policy recommendations to enhance social protection for remote workers.
