Exploring the Transformation of identity in Sandra Cisneros the House on Mango Street

ABSTRACT The House on Mango Street is a Chicana literature novel written by Chicana writer Sandra Cisneros. Chicana literature is an important part of Mexican-American literature which explores the political, social and cultural norms experience that bares of Mexican American people and also particularly those who are identified as Chicana. Sandra Cisneros is regarded as one of the most well-known writers in Chicana literature. Her contributions have greatly influenced the genre and elevated Mexican-American women's voices. She uses her experiences as a Latina living in a struggling Chicago area to examine issues of gender identity, class, patriarchy, racism, and sexuality in her writing. The present study explores the transformation stages of the protagonist Esperanza. This paper mainly delves in to the theme of self-identity and interprets the growing experience of the protagonist Esperanza through the perspective of Erickson’s identity crisis theory.This paper uses Erikson's identity theory as a framework to analyze the identity crises faced by Esperanza in The House on Mango Street bySandra Cisneros. This research examines the unique aspects of Mexican-American history and culture. Further the paper also looks into how the protagonist encounters with gender, financial struggles and cultural background.
