External Application (Poultice) – for Keelvayu (Arthritis)

INTRODUCTION

Siddha system of medicine is one of the ancient medicine system.  Arthritis is a form of Joint disorders that involves inflammation of one (or) more joints.  In General population women-24.3%, men-18.7% are affected.  It may occur in aged people, irrespective of sex.

Objectives:

To study the efficacy of Kalarchi ilai patru (Poultice) in the management of Keelvayu (Arthritis).

Methods:

The Poultice is made from the leaf of Caesalpinia Crista,(Kalarchi) Rhizome of Acorus Calamous (Vasambu), Cloves of Allium Sativum (Vellaipoondu) as per indicated in Siddha literature Agathiyar Ayulvedam(280).  Then the poultice is applied on the affected joint for 7 days.  This clinical trial was done in 20 patients randomly selected from OPD and IPD of  Rajaas Hospital Theni.

Result:

From the 7 days of external therapy, the pain swelling is reduced and evidence are described detailed in full paper.

Conclusion:

Siddha system of medicine provide progressive result in the treatment of Keelvayu (Arthritis) without any adverse effect.
