Female Labor Force Participation: A Comprehensive Study of India’s Workforce

Author Name : Dr. Meena Kujur, Annu Kumari

The participation of women in the labor force is essential for economic growth and gender equality. In India, female labor force participation (FLFP) has shown gradual improvement in recent years but remains significantly lower than the global average, reflecting socio-economic, cultural, and structural barriers. This study examines trends in FLFP using data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2021-22, identifying critical factors such as education, wage disparities, and societal norms that limit women’s workforce engagement. It also evaluates government interventions, including Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, labor reforms, and skill development initiatives aimed at increasing FLFP. While progress has been made, challenges like low participation rates, wage inequality, and limited access to quality employment persist. Addressing these barriers through targeted policies and collaborative efforts can unlock the potential of women, contributing to sustainable development and national prosperity.
