Flavonoid and Tannin Estimation of Neolamarckia cadamba: A Comparative Evaluation

Author Name : Swati Shikha, Arun Kumar

ABSTRACT Flavonoids and tannins are one of most important polyphenols widely found in plants and contain several biological activities. Present study was performed to evaluate the flavonoid and tannin contents present in Neolamarckia cadamba, belongs to family rubiaceae. Both polyphenols were evaluated comparatively from different parts of Neolamarckia cadamba which includes leaves (NCLE), bark (NCBA), unripe fruits (NCUF) and ripe fruits (NCRF). Extraction from plant sample was carried out using methanol as solvent. Total flavonoid contents were determined by aluminium chloride colorimetric assay using Quercetin as standard whereas Total tannin contents were determined by Folin- Ciocalteu reagent method using tannic acid as standard. It was found that flavonoids were present in high concentration in every studied plant part of Neolamarckia cadamba as compared to tannins. NCBA was found to be high in flavonoids followed by NCLE, NCUF and NCRF. Similarly,NCBA was also found to be high in tannins but unlike flavonoids, tannins concentration was high in NCRF followed by NCUF and NCLE.
