Floral Waste Management: By Conversion to Enriched Products and Their Application with Reference to Temples in Maharashtra: Review

ABSTRACT

India is known as holy country worldwide.Maharashtra is an Indian state with many temples that are visited by most devotees.Saibaba temple(Shirdi,Ahmednagar),Siddhivinayak temple (Dadar, Mumbai),Jivdani temple (Virar,Palghar) ,Saptashrungi Mata temple(Jalgaon) etc.are some of the most famous temples in Maharashtra.At such places of worship, many devotees put forth flowers ,garlands to show devotion and loyalty .But these flowers, according to many religious beliefs , that are offered during prayersmust not be dumped with the regular garbage. Authorities of some temples make special arrangements of packing and transportation to dispose it off in holy water rivers, ponds and other water bodies, due to which they remain untreated and causes many types of pollution such as water,air etc. hence this method is not satisfactory. Huge tons of floral waste is generated everyday, such floral waste can be utilized.This review describes the beneficial way of conversion of floral waste into enriched products such as biogas ,biofuel,non-edible oil,incense sticks, natural dye ,compost etc.Such enriched products have many applications in agriculture industry, foodindustry, perfume industry etc.The waste can be used to generate wealth. Additionally,the review highlights the application of floral waste in small scale industries like handmade paper.The review also focuses on the reduction of environmental pollution which is caused due to untreated floral waste.
