ABSTRACT

Mercury being an essential working constituent in fluorescent lamps that outperforms more than four times then incandescent bulbs but also parallelly proves to be hazardous element for living beings and environment. Mercury in bulbs is mostly in the elemental form, with 17-40% of it present as a gas. The goal of this R&D research was to figure out how to catch this poisonous vapor and prevent it from escaping into the atmosphere and eventually settling in lakes and rivers. This will be accomplished by shattering the bulbs to release the mercury vapor, and then channeling the mercury-laden air through an activated carbon filter, where the mercury molecules will absorb. For this reason, a lamp crusher machine with four basic components is needed: a carbon filter, a vacuum pump, a storage structure, and a crushing unit.
