Formulation and Evaluation of Topical Gel Containing Tavaborole Antifungal Drug

Author Name : Simran D. Jadhav, S. S. AHER

ABSTRACT

Superficial fungal diseases are among the most common infections of humans. They consist primarily of tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporea, yeast infections and onychomycosis. They are primarily caused by dermatophytes belonging to three genera (Epidermophyton, Trichophyton and Microsporum) and Candida. It is estimated that as many as 40 million persons suffer from such infections in low-income countries. Of these infections, onychomycosis (fungal nail infections) occurs in 10-30% of the world population and these are the most difficult to cure with existing medications.

Fungal nail infections occur throughout the inhabited world with a recent estimate that fully 50% of those over 80 years of age are afflicted. Gels have better potential as a vehicle to administered drug topically in comparison to ointment, because they requires low energy during the formulation. Tavaborole is an oxaborole antifungal indicated for the topical treatment of onychomycosis of the toenails due to Trichophyton rubrum or Trichophyton mentagrophytes.

Adverse effects reported with Tavaborole most commonly affect the skin redness, skin inflammation, ingrown nails, peeling of dead skin.
