Formulation and Manufacturing of Crystalline Solid Dosage Forms

ABSTRACT
The marketed pharmaceuticals exist in the solid dosage forms containing drug in the crystalline form. As solid dosage forms remains primary option when developing a drug product hence there is a need to have a special issue of formulation and manufacturing of crystalline solid dosage forms. The arrangement of molecules in a crystal determines its physical properties and in certain cases it’s chemical properties, so there is a great influence in the processing and formulation of crystalline solid dosage forms. Crystalline solids can exist in the form of polymorphs, solvates or hydrates and co-crystals. This study mainly investigate and characterize different crystal forms of drugs. Various analytical methods are developed to understand the nature and to characterize the different crystalline forms. In impure or dooped crystals it also involves the defects containing the foreign particles. Co-crystals often rely on hydrogen bond present between neutral molecules of API. The preferred solid form is generally the thermodynamically most stable crystalline form of the compound.
