Geo-Strategic Importance of the Indian Ocean
Author Name : Research Scholar Harpreet Singh
ABSTRACT
In modern times, each country has to protect its land, air and water from three sides. Due to science and technological advances, weapons have become such that they can be attacked easily in land, air and water. The modern era is the era of science & technology. Therefore, it is important for a country to have the same protection from land and air as it does from water. India is bounded on three sides by the Indian Ocean; its coastline is approximately 7516 km long. With such a long coastline, India's security is significantly affected by the Indian Ocean.
India is located on the continent north of the Indian Ocean. There are also many islands in India in the Indian Ocean which occupy a very important place in today's battle. In the past, the Indian Ocean's influence on India's security has been and will continue to be in the future. The Indian Ocean plays a vital role in formulating and changing future strategies for the fight against power among the world's powerful countries. Thus, where the Indian Ocean exerts influence over other powers, India is also heavily influenced by security as India is the main country in the Indian Ocean. K. M. Panikar said in this regard, "India has not lost its independence until it has taken control of its sea." In this paper, we can examine the following aspects under the heading of political, economic and security of the India in the Indian Ocean Region and also examine some external forces affecting India's maritime security. In the absence of such aspects, it would be a matter of serious concern if India would find itself struggling to secure its own maritime interests.
