Geoffrey Chaucer As A Father of Modern English Poetry

Author Name : Dr. Peeyush Kumar Sharma

ABSTRACT

The age of Geoffrey Chaucer was an age of transition and upheaval. The old feudalism was slowly dying and the peasants’ revolt of 1381 posed a serious threat to the existence of English feudal system. At that time Chaucer played an important role through his writings, he represent his age through his works like, Alexander Pope does to the 18th century, and Tennyson to the Victorian era. Even then Chaucer’s place in English literature is even more important than theirs, for he is the first great English writer—the first man to use “naked words” in English, the first to make our composite language a thing compact and vital. He is well known by his quote that:  "Time and tide, wait for none.”
