"Health Insurance Awareness among General Population"

ABSTRACT
Health insurance is one of the important approaches that can help in boosting universal health care coverage through improved healthcare utilisation and financial protection.A descriptive study was conducted to assess the awareness of health insurance among general population residing in selected area of Derabassi, Distt. Mohali, Punjab. The objectives of the study were to assess the awareness regarding health insurance and to find out association between health insurance among general population and their selected demographic variables. Convenience sampling technique was used to select 60 residents in selected area of Derabassi. Self structured knowledge questionnaire was used to collect the data regarding awareness of health insurance.Study findings revealed that 33.3% of the subjects were in the age group of 18 to 30 years. Majority(58.3%) of the subjects were female,53.3% of subjects were hindu,33.3% had completed their education up to graduation level,50% subjects belong to joint family and 50% were self-employed. 38.3% of population had total income in the range less than 20,000.Majority of subjects (75%) were married. Majority of people (65.45%) had average awareness regarding health insurance, 29% had good awareness , only 5.45 % subjects were having poor awareness. Mean and SD regarding awareness of health insurance was 14.68±6.48 respectively. There was no statistically significant association was found between awareness of health insurance of subjects and their selected demographic variables. The outcome of this study highlighted a growing need for the adoption of innovative local strategies to improve awareness in general population related to health insurance in order to make health services accessible and affordable to community people.
