Author Name : Chandrakant Dixit, Iti Chauhan, Madhu Verma

ABSTRACT

In the pharmaceutical industries, during formulation development of any drug molecule, solubility plays a crucial role. It is an inherent property of any solid, liquid, or gas. Low solubility is also a prime complication faced during the creation of formulations of new drug molecules. Low aqueous solubility also shows the difficulty in bioavailability. In order to solve this issue industries, use a class of amphiphilic molecules known as Hydrotopes. A Hydrotrope solubilizes the hydrophobic part of the drug molecule in aqueous solutions and thus hydrotropy is a way of increasing the solubility of a substance by applying this technique to the poorly soluble compounds. As a general rule, it is the addition of large amounts of a second compound which results in enhancing the solubility in water of a weakly soluble compound. Hydrotopes are used in novel applications as molecular probes and for controlled release drug delivery systems of pharmaceutical products. One of the most critical characteristics for achieving the optimum medication concentration in systemic circulation for the intended therapeutic effect is drug solubility. In the pharmaceutical industry, there are a variety of methods for increasing the bioavailability of weakly water-soluble medicines. Nowadays hydrotropes are in fashion. This review hereby throws some clarification on the phenomenon of hydrotropy, mechanism of action of hydrotropes and a brief review of past research studies.
