ABSTRACT This study examines the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 at the primary school level in West Bengal, focusing on its progress, challenges, and policy alignment. Using a qualitative analytical approach, it reviews major policy documents such as NEP 2020, NCF 2023, and state education reports, along with data from UDISE+, academic research, and NGO findings. The study highlights that while West Bengal has made commendable efforts—such as launching the Banglar Shiksha portal, Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) Mission, and curriculum reforms—implementation remains uneven across districts. Key challenges include limited resources, teacher shortages, weak coordination between departments, and resistance to pedagogical change. Nonetheless, the state’s strong educational legacy and committed teaching force provide a solid foundation for reform. The paper recommends short-, medium-, and long-term strategies, including enhanced teacher training, infrastructure improvement, digital inclusion, and community participation. Ultimately, successful implementation of NEP 2020 in West Bengal’s primary schools can create a more inclusive, child-centred, and future-ready education system that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning among young learners.
