Innovative Application-Based Techniques for Preserving Wetlands

ABSTRACT Wetlands are among the most valuable yet threatened ecosystems on Earth, offering critical services such as water purification, flood regulation, biodiversity conservation, and carbon sequestration. Despite their ecological importance, wetlands continue to decline due to urbanization, pollution, and unsustainable land use. Traditional protection measures, while essential, are insufficient without linking conservation to socio-economic incentives. This paper explores application-oriented techniques for wetland preservation that integrate ecology with economy. Itincludes water farming, riparian afforestation, lemongrass and medicinal plant cultivation, nutraceutical capsule development, sustainable agrifarming, oxygen generation through algae, and bio-oil production. These strategies transform wetlands into hubs of ecological and economic productivity, encouraging community participation and sustainable livelihoods. Geology and ecology serve as the foundation for selecting appropriate interventions, ensuring long-term resilience of wetlands. Case applications from India and beyond demonstrate the feasibility of this integrated model. By reframing wetlands as ecological–economic assets, this study highlights a circular approach to conservation that aligns biodiversity protection with human well-being.
